Back in the days “console wars” were fun. But also not as useless as today. Every player had its own right to be “proud” of their system because every company – Nintendo, Sony and Sega – had great games. Today it’s a different time when looking at the two main players (Nintendo is a different beast). There is literally no argument for a Microsoft console. There are no exclusives. And exclusives are the reason to buy a console.
If and when every game will come to any platform, you will only need one platform. Sony is the best game company out there because simple as that – they have the most and more importantly best exclusives by far. In the (very few) cases when there was an exclusive on Xbox (only timed anyway) I would rent or buy (and then sell) an Xbox. As soon as Sony should bring their games to the PC as well (streaming doesn’t count because streaming games doesn’t work well and never will), there is no reason to have a Playstation. Simple as that.
PCs are made out to be complicated and expensive. They’re not. They were several years back. You have to buy a cassis with power supply, a motherboard, a cpu, fan and that’s it. You put the cpu inside the mainboard and fan on top of it and you’re done. Computers that run modern games you can get for 300-500 bucks. The main reasons for a console (besides exclusives) are playing on the couch (Such a better experience than sitting on a chair), playing with a controller (Nothing worse and sterile than moving your character with mouse and keyboard), playing in front of a TV (Games on a 50″ screen look great even in 720p because of a superior built-in upscaler) instead of monitor. All those reasons obviously are not real reasons because all of that you can get with a PC in your living room too (except the exclusives).
Even though today consoles are the main market, the future very likely will only see PCs. Thankfully games even there try to become more of a “console experience” overall (Limited game saves, good gui, easy to get into, experience instead of sterile worlds, way better artdesign instead of sharp textures and framecount, to name a few).
So until we will live in a world with just one platform, here are the exclusives (worth mentioning) on each one:
Computer (Steam, last two years)
Star Citizen, Kentucky Route Zero, Zombie Night Terror, Kingdom,
Microsoft Xbox (360 & One) *
Forza (Horizons), Sunset Overdrive, (Halo)
* For clarification, games like Gears of War, Alan Wake or others are not exclusive to a single platform
